A young man named Steve Biko had a tough choice to make; should he just put his head down and do as he is told, focus on his studies and career? Or should he give it all up and instead go help people in the impoverished black communities, and become an enemy of the state, and a wanted man?

"We felt that we must instill once more a sense of dignity within the Black man. So what we did was to design various types of programs, present these to the Black community with an obvious illustration that these are done by the Black people for the sole purpose of uplifting the Black community. We believe that we teach people by example.” Bantu Steven Biko

Steve Biko and Mamphela Ramphele, founders of the Black Consciousness Movement, saw Black Community Programs as vital and integral to their vision. This dynamic duo and their friends were running clinics, schools, and vibrant community centers where they grew vegetables and did arts and crafts, and other socio-economic programs, training and empowering youth and women, and liberating minds.
